E-DRUG: Use of Cotrimoxazole (Sulfametoxazole/Trimethoprim) suspension (2)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Seid Beti,
I think the main aspect to consider here is Current Good Manufacturing
Practices of the manufacturers for the Cotrimoxazole syrups used. A
recent study show that Cotrimoxazole syrups are most stable in simple
demineralized water bases. But here again I think the main aspect to
consider if the fact that for oral dosage formulations, official
standards required that viable microbial counts should not exceed
1.0x103cfu/ml and the products should not contain enteric
microorganisms. then the solution can be used over a longer period of time.
Here is one such research
http://www.japer.in/Issue/Issu%202%20august/26.pdf .
Basically I think
if the syrups are stored in cool, dry conditions and used hygienically,
then the formulation would be least suitable as a substrate for
microbial infestation; thereby live for longer on shelf. In such a case
the syringes used to draw out syrups should be washed and dried
before re-use.
