[e-drug] Use of generic or brand names in prescriptions

E-DRUG: Use of generic or brand names in prescriptions
--------------------------------------------

In the Philippines, there is a law, the Generics Act, that requires doctors
to prescribe medicines by their generic name. Brand names can only be
written in parenthesis after the generic name. The purpose of this provision
is to promote the prescription and use of generics by doctors and patients.
However, after 20 years, generic products still constitute less than 10% of
pharmaceutical sales.

*I'm interested to know if this requirement, or anything similar, is being
practiced in any other country and what has been the effect of this practice
on the use of generic products.*

Respected members,
In India Two state governments have made that all prescrptions be written
by generic names by their employees. In India generics cost the same or more
sometimes . The price is very low till it reaches pharma stockist ,some times
less than 10% of maximum retail Price printed on the pack. For example
albendazole 400 mg tab costs INR1 at pharma stockist has MRP of
RS12. Nimesulide 10 tablets cost less than INR 2 but Mrp for pack is Rs25.
