Press & Communications Manager
Drugs for Neglected Disease initiative, Tokyo, Japan

Objectives
The primary function of the Press and Communications Manager is to contribute to DNDi's vision by developing and implementing a communications strategy for DNDi Japan in close collaboration with the DNDi Communication team based in Geneva. S/he is responsible for leading activities to raise DNDi's profile across multiple target audiences in the country. The Press and Communications Manager is also responsible for media relations, in order to raise the profile of DNDi Japan with key audiences and, through the coordination of press relations with mainstream news media, to increase awareness of neglected diseases and the needs of patients suffering from these diseases.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning
* Leads the development and implementation of the DNDi Japan-specific communications plans, including all efforts to increase awareness of DNDi's activities in Japan through the media, print and digital publications, scientific publications, conferences, public education, public events, etc.
* Develops a comprehensive communication strategy for DNDi in Japan with the DNDi Japan team as well as the DNDi communications team based in Geneva.
* Ensures coherent communication activities by working in close partnership with Communications teams in Geneva and at regional and project offices.

Communications tools
* Develops and implement Japanese strategy and planning of DNDi corporate communications tools answering needs of the different audiences
* Manages the translation, adaptation, and production process for global corporate communication tools to ensure consistency, in terms of messaging, style, graphic design, branding, and distributionfor all print and electronic tools, and Powerpoint presentations.
* Monitors and measure impact of all corporate tools in Japan.
* Improves and updates the DNDi Japan website content in close cooperation with the local team and the DNDi Social Media and Web Manager.
* Contracts and manages service providers as necessary (translations, graphic design, printing, etc.)
* Develops specific texts of the documents in collaboration with other team members and coordinate the overall editing in Japanese.
* Ensures the production process and the produced tools are in compliance with the relevant local regulations with the help of legal specialists.
* Manages the organization of events of key significance to the advancement of the overall goals and objectives of DNDi Japan.
Media Relations
* Develops overall strategy and planning of DNDi Japan media relations.
* Acts as a focal point within the team to ensure consistency in messaging between global and Japanese media relations
* Writes or translates specific press releases
* Is responsible for Japanese media and identify opportunities, develops and maintains existing press contacts, liaises with DNDi headquarters and other regional offices where necessary for other media relations
* Is the focal person for media requests in Japan.
Organizational Relationships
The Press and Communications Manager reports to the head of DNDi Japan. As a member of the global DNDi communications network, s/he also maintains a functional reporting role to the Head of Communication and Advocacy based in Geneva. S/he will also work closely with the following members of the DNDi global team to ensure successful implementation of DNDi's communication strategy in Japan:
* Entire DNDi Japan team including Chairman, to ensure coherent messages in the country.
* Entire HQ communications team in Geneva as well as communications teams in all Regional Offices, to ensure coherent global communication
* Advocacy, Communications & Fundraising Director
Requirements
* Minimum 7 years' experience in journalism, publishing, or related field
* Japanese as a mother tongue
* English fluency (other languages a plus)
* Excellent writing skills in Japanese and good writing skills in English
* Ability to find appropriate and interesting press angles and proactively propose these to media
* Knowledge and experience in website management
* Ability to grasp DNDi's working culture, vision, and activities
* Cultural fluency and ability to navigate between Japanese communication practices and those in the global communications team
* Background in or good understanding of global health, medical innovation, scientific research, and access to medicines issues in developing countries is a plus
* Established press network and relationships in Japan with journalists and media/broadcast outlets
* Experience in working internationally with a non-governmental organization or other NPOs
* Team spirit is a must!
