OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
UNITAID's mission is to contribute to the scale-up of access to treatment
for HIV and AIDs, malaria and tuberculosis for people in developing countries by
leveraging quality drugs and diagnostics price reductions, and accelerating
the pace at which they are made available.

Description of duties:
Under the supervision of the Technical Adviser Intellectual Property and
Patent Pool, and in liaison with relevant UNITAID staff, the Technical
Writer will contribute to the background research and writing of technical
documents and documents aimed at the general public regarding the medicines
patent pool initiative and perform other duties as necessary for the
duration of his/her contract.

Summary of Assigned Duties:
1. Undertake background research on technical issues related to medicines
patent pool.
2. Write, edit and proofread technical and legal documents.
3. Prepare technical documents for publication in journals, position papers,
speeches and talking points.
4. Prepare media and advocacy materials regarding issues related to
Intellectual Property and the medicines patent pool.
5. Coordinate implementation of media and advocacy campaigns related to the
patent pool.
6. Present complex technical information on Intellectual Property to target
audiences.
7. Identify key messages and provide systematically input for UNITAID
website related to the patent pool initiative.
8. Responsible for updating background materials, including fact sheets,
Questions and Answers regarding topics covered by UNITAID.
9. Prepare and finalize reports of meetings.
10. Responsible for preparing documentation for the Executive board.
11. Other duties as necessary.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education:
Essential
Advanced University degree in journalism, communications or law with
extensive background in writing for professional and general audiences.

Desirable
Studies relevant to intellectual property and access to medicines.
Skills:
Essential
1. Excellent written and oral communication skills
2. Background research and analytical skills
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively on complex issues
4. Good understanding of communication principles
5. Strong interpersonal skills and team spirit
6. Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
7. Computer literacy.

Desirable
Knowledge of desktop publishing.

Essential
1. At least 7 years of experience in researching, technical writing, and
communication.
2. Experience and knowledge in public health with issues related to access
to medicines and intellectual property.
3. Significant experience in writing for professional and general audiences.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English or French with a good working knowledge of
the other language.

As a WHO staff member assigned solely and exclusively to support the
International drug purchase facility (UNITAID), selected staff will have no
right of reassignment or transfer outside the UNITAID either during or at
the end of his/her appointment, including pursuant to WHO Staff Rule
1050. Annual
salary: (Net of tax)
USD 64521 at single rate
USD 69287 with primary dependants Post Adjustment: 79.80 % of the above
figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since
variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency
exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
