E-drug: Vitamin K and upper Gl bleeding (cont'd)
--------------------------------------------->
Dear Sir,
about the rationality of vit K in liver disease,
1 vit K is required for synthesis of procoagulant factors like
II, VII, IX,and X by the liver.
2 if the liver fails, in spite of presence of adequate vit K
there will be coagulation disorders.
That is - haemorrhagic disorders due to liver failure cannot be
corrected by vit k therapy.
BUT
3 vit K1 and K2 are fat soluble and absorbed from the intestine
via the the route through which food fat is absorbed. Thus bile
salts must be present in the intestine for absorption of K1 and K2.
4 Obstructive jaundice thus can cause vit K deficiency. Incidently
body stores of vit K are low
5 Patients suffering from long standing Obstructive Jaundice
-cancer head of pancreas are susceptible to bleeding disorders and
are thus bad surgical risks
In such cases vit K must be given by injection
I hope this gives some basis .
Sincerely,
Dr.Mrs.Charusheila Walavalkar, Assoc. Prof.
