E-drug: WHO and training (cont)
---------------------------------------------

Dear E-drug users:

In response to George Kibumba's comment on the need of publications
relevant for health professionals in developing countries I would like to
say some comments:
1- WHO has already developed a strategy with the aim to improve the
use of drugs. They are promoting and supporting training courses directed to
teachers of Pharmacotherapy.
What we urgently need in order to improve the quality of our health
professionals is to introduce changes in the selection of contents and
methodology of the learning-teaching process in Pharmacotherapy , Pharmacy
and Medicine.
2- Speaking of rational use of medicines and facing an increasing number
of new drugs in our pharmaceutical markets we need to develop in our medical
doctors and pharmacists, a critical attitude to look for and to evaluate
information about medicines (old or new ones): its efficacy,
safety,convenience and cost
3-At the same time , students must learn a systematic process of
solving health problems. This systematic includes a methodology to select
and to apply adequate treatments needed to solve common problems. In
this way , medical doctors will be prepared to apply the same
methodology also in the solving of non-common health problems.
4-The University of Groningen and the Department of Essential Medicines of
WHO, Geneve have developed and published the Guide to Good Prescribing, an
excellent book which can be used with the students guided by trained
facilitators.
5-Furthemore, we need aware teachers, with knowledge about all the
excellent materials already published by WHO, such as the above cited
Guide to Good Prescribing, Therapeutic Guides, documents about Rational Use
of drugs, economical aspects involved in accessibility, databases on reference
prices, all the TRIPS issue, etc, contents and concepts that must be
incorporated in the medical and pharmaceutics curricula. These topics are
not only useful to the Health Authorities.

In my opinion, all our health professionals must know about them, in order
to contribute to reach our main goals such as Equity, Efficiency and
quality of the health care of our population.

6-If we agree with this view, we must think together how to contribute in
the dissemination of publications at the academic level
