E-DRUG: WHO Commission on IP Rights, Innovation and Public Health
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The purpose of this message is to alert you to the Commission on
Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation and Public Health which was
established by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr LEE
Jong-wook, in February 2004. The Commission held its first meeting in April.
If you would like to keep in touch with the work of the Commission, we would
encourage you to register on the Commission web site by visiting
www.who.int/intellectualproperty/contact/form. This means you will
receive occasional updates on the work of the Commission (not more than once
a month).
The Commission's terms of reference are to "... produce an analysis of
intellectual property rights, innovation, and public health, including the
question of appropriate funding and incentive mechanisms for the creation of
new medicines and other products against diseases that disproportionately
affect developing countries..."
It is due to issue its report by January 2006.
For more information on the work of the Commission, please visit our web
site at www.who.int/intellectualproperty. The web site is available in
English, French and Spanish. It contains background information on the
Commission members, a calendar of events, news items and a series of
documents related to the areas of work of the Commission. There will also
shortly be a web based discussion forum for people to make known their views
to the Commission.
