[e-drug] WHO EDL Committee to consider 6 more antiretrovirals

E-DRUG: WHO EDL Committee to consider 6 more antiretrovirals
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further to my message of 20 March, the WHO/EDM website on the upcoming EDL
Committee meeting in Geneva (15-19
April)(http://www.who.int/medicines/organization/par/edl/expertcomm.shtml)
lists a lot more material to be discussed by the Expert Committee.

For example, 6 more anti-retrovirals are proposed to be declared essential
drugs: didanosine (ddI), stavudine (d4T), zodovudine (AZT) + lamuvidine
(3TC) combination, efavirenz, indinavir + low dose ritonavir, and
nelfinavir mesylate.

There is also a response by MSF which proposes to add nevirapine (for
triple treatment; it was already on the WHO EDL for MTCT) and to consider
fixed-dose combinations of antiretrovirals.

Regular E-drug contributor Leo Offerhaus comments on 19 drugs, and E-drug
moderators Kirsten Myhr and Richard Laing have also submitted files.

The deadline for consideration by the Expert Committee has passed (8 April)
but in E-drug we don't stop discussing...

A specific problem for E-drug is that WHO proposes to change the term
"essential drug" into "essential medicine". It will be hard to change our
name E-drug, especially as our french sister conference already uses the
now more appropriate name E-med!

At least 3 E-drug moderators will be in Geneva at the time of the Expert
Committee, so we hope to see some news coming out of Geneva?

regards
