[e-drug] WHO prequalified and FDA approved HIV-related drugs

E-DRUG: WHO prequalified and FDA approved HIV-related drugs
-----------------------------------------------------------

Dear e-druggers,

WHO is continuously updating its lists of prequalified HIV, TB, and malaria-related products and QC laboratories. The 38th list was published last week, already the 8th update this year. Interestingly, WHO is not only listing its own prequalified drugs, but also the FDA approved or tentatively approved drugs. This is remarkable, as the PEPFAR program does not recognize the WHO PQ system. The products on the WHO list can thus be:
- Prequalified by WHO
- Prequalified by WHO and tentatively approved by US FDA
- Prequalified by WHO and approved by US FDA
- Approved by US FDA
- Tentatively approved by US FDA

General PQ site: http://mednet3.who.int/prequal/
HIV-related PQ list: http://mednet3.who.int/prequal/lists/hiv_suppliers.pdf

The TB list has only 8 prequalified products listed, and has not seen any new drugs since May 2005 (see http://mednet3.who.int/prequal/lists/tub_suppliers.pdf)

The malaria list still only has 5 products prequalified. This is disappointing. One has reference number 44; would this mean that some 39 products are still "pending"? http://mednet3.who.int/prequal/lists/mal_suppliers.pdf

The QC lab list only has 3 labs listed.

WHO is doing a good job; let's hope brandnme and generic companies will submit all their relevant products so that developing countries and Global Fund projects can rely on good independent product reviews.
