‘No more than a drop in the ocean’: this drug could end new HIV infections in Eswatini – why isn’t there enough?

The southern Africa country has the world’s highest prevalence of HIV but the amount of lenacapavir reaching it is too small to reach all those at risk… This is the first time an HIV drug has reached sub-Saharan Africa in the same year as it becomes available in higher-income countries like the US. But the manufacturer, Gilead, has been criticised for putting restrictions on which countries can access cheaper supplies, and for refusing to sell directly to humanitarian organisations. This week, Médecins Sans Frontières said that in blocking access to the drug Gilead was putting “vulnerable people in danger”.

The Journal of Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice (JoPPP) will host its 5th JoPPP Impact Conference on 11–13 November 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Hosted by Etugen University, the conference will bring together pharmacists, researchers, academics, and health professionals from around the world to discuss this year’s theme: “Pharmaceutical Policy & Practice: Innovation and Global Cooperation.”
The programme will feature plenary sessions on pharmaceutical policy and regulation, medicines safety, transparency and oversight, technological innovation and AI, personalised therapy, traditional medicine, and trends in pharmaceutical education, alongside oral presentations in parallel sessions.
