9th Annual IPPF/GTZ Course on Population and Development
--------------------------------------------------------
"A Sexual and Reproductive Health Perspective"
8-21 July 2001
Cambridge, UK
An intensive two-week residential course for professionals in the
field of family planning and sexual & reproductive health held at
Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK.
INTRODUCTION
At the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD)
held in Cairo in 1994 governments of 179 countries agreed that popu-
lation and development are inextricably linked, and that empowering
women and meeting people's needs for education and health, including
sexual and reproductive health, are necessary for both individual ad-
vancement and balanced development. The Conference firmly moved the
focus of family planning away from fertility targets and demographic
goals towards meeting the sexual and reproductive health needs and
rights of women, men and young people. Drawing on a spectrum of in-
ternational experts and the insights from previous Cambridge Course
participants, IPPF and GTZ have devised a dynamic two-week curriculum
which combines a brief introduction to population and development, a
theoretical overview of current developments in the field of sexual
and reproductive health, together with the opportunity to discuss key
programme areas of concern in more depth. Central to our approach on
the course is an interactive learning environment and participation
is key to activities.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE
* You will be familiar with the major international developments and
programme priorities in the areas of sexual and reproductive health.
* You will have enhanced your understanding of the concepts of sexual
and reproductive health and of the methods, techniques and services
that contribute to good reproductive health.
* You will have had the opportunity to select from a number of spe-
cialist workshops certain key topics which you wish to explore in
greater depth, for example project development, adolescent sexual and

* You will have visited two London-based family planning/ SRH agen-
cies/ NGOs, with the chance to interact and have discussions with the

laboratively to overcome problems you have identified in the field.
