A Partnership to Improve Health Worker Retention in Rural Areas
How can we increase access to health workers in remote areas? Dr. Carmen Dolea has been thinking about this challenge for a while.
The latest edition of CapacityPlus <http://www.capacityplus.org/> Voices, Partnering to keep health workers in the communities that need them <http://www.capacityplus.org/sites/intrah\.civicactions\.net/files/resources/Voices\_2\_WHO\.pdf> , features Dr. Dolea of the World Health Organization. She talks about the WHO's global policy recommendations <http://www.who.int/hrh/retention/guidelines/en/index.html> for increasing access to health workers through improved retention in remote and rural areas.
"We approached this from an evidence-based perspective," Dr. Dolea points out, "and we embarked on this issue with expert consultations."
Dr. Dolea emphasizes that countries should consider the recommendations "within the overall development of the national human resources for health plan." Following analysis of the current situation and needs, policy-makers can "come up with a priority list of interventions that are most appropriate for the country context and situation."
CapacityPlus is currently partnering with the WHO to help apply the recommendations at the country level.
