MEDICAL RESEARCH COUNCIL LABORATORIES, THE GAMBIA
MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council's
largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and
clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to im-
prove the health of people in developing countries by contribut-
ing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interven-
tions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality
from infectious diseases.
We are presently interested in receiving applications from
suitably qualified candidates to undertake excellent research in
our Malaria Programme which is beginning a new phase focussing
on the parasitology, pathogenesis and prevention of the disease.
The new programme will have a strong laboratory research focus,
integrated together with cutting-edge clinical and community-
based research.
Senior Scientific Officer - Parasitologist
You will have a first degree in Biomedical Science and a PhD in
Parasitology with a minimum of 2 years work experience post PhD.
You must be able to demonstrate your ability to work in a highly
disciplined manner in a laboratory, have excellent communication
and organisational skills, excellent written and spoken English
and good IT skills, e.g. Word, Excel. In addition, you must have
proven experience of supervising staff effectively and present-
ing results to internal and external parties.
The appointment will be for 3 years.
Research Clinician
You will have MB BS or equivalent medical qualification, a mini-
mum of three years experience, with preference given to paediat-
ric and general medicine, excellent communication, organisa-
tional and record keeping skills and proven experience of super-
vising staff effectively. You will also have proven ability to
work as a highly effective team player, basic IT skills, e.g.
Word, Excel and an interest in clinical research into the dis-
eases of the tropics.
The appointment will be for 1 year in the first instance.
The minimum total salary package for the Senior Scientific Offi-
cer, which is in Occupational Group E1, will be approximately
420,000 Dalasis per annum and for the Research Clinician which
is in Occupational Group D3, approximately 405,000 Dalasis per
annum. For displaced staff the package will include displacement
allowances, rent free furnished accommodation, flights and other
benefits.
