Position: Research Clinician - Severe Pneumonia Studies

The MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the UK Medical Research Council's largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age globally. Understanding childhood pneumonia and developing interventions to prevent it and reduce its mortality are keys to achieving the UN's Millenium Development Goal of reducing under-5 mortality two-thirds by 2015. MRC Laboratories is one of the world leaders in research on childhood pneumonia. We seek a capable, keen and committed Research Clinician to be responsible for the enrolment, investigation and clinical management of children enrolled in our severe pneumonia studies. You will also be part of a team involved in a wider programme of pneumonia research at the Unit. Although based at our main site at Fajara you will be required to travel within the Western Region of The Gambia.

We seek someone with:
* MB, BS, Part 1 FWACP or equivalent
* Minimum of 3 years post-graduate experience, with preference given to paediatrics
* Experience of staff management
* Good record keeping and clinical procedure skills
* Excellent written and spoken English
* Computer literacy in Windows, Word, Excel and statistical software
* Ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team, including scientists, public sector and Gambian Government staff
* Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
* Ability to deal sensitively with children and their mothers
* A flexible and well-organized approach to work and an ability to meet deadlines
* Willingness to be on-call and work outside the normal working hours.

Although not essential Part 2 FWACP would be an advantage.

The minimum total salary package for the post is 458,557 Dalasis per annum. If you have your full FWACP the total salary package will be 550,033 Dalasis per annum. For displaced staff the package will include displacement allowances, rent-free furnished accommodation, flights and shipment of personal effects.
