Objectives
African Heads of State and government are confronted with the chal-
lenge of developing policies, strategies, structures and processes to
ensure the adequate control of HIV/AIDS, TB and other related infec-
tious diseases.
Goals
* To develop and concrete policies, strategies, structures with the
view to ensure adequate control of HIV/AIDS, TB and other related in-
fectious disease for the improvement of the well-being of all African
Populations.
* To develop processes and procedures that will ensure a higher de-
gree of political commitment that will be translated into policies
and strategies to control the impact of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and
other related infectious diseases based on a concrete and valuable
Plan of Action; and
* To develop internal and external resource mobilization mechanisms
and partnership, for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of
the Programme of Action.

Main issues to be discussed
- Analysis of challenges on response to HIV/AIDS in Africa: situation
analysis and response.
- Analysis of previous declarations and the way forward.
- Overview on TB in Africa: Analysis of the response, socio-economic
input and suggestion on way forward.
- Integrated disease surveillance for infectious diseases: scope of
surveillance, identification of best practices.
- Leadership role in combating HIV/AIDS, outcome of African Develop-
ment Forum 2000.
- Development of continental policy and strategies on prevention and
sustainable access to care, drugs and support.
- How do we operationalize and sustain the multi-sectoral approach
with respect to HIV/AIDS, TB and other related infectious diseases.
- Research in African on HIV/AIDS and TB vaccines, traditional medi-
cines and socio-economic research.
- Sustainable Resource Mobilization for HIV/AIDS, TB and Other Re-
lated Infectious Diseases
- International partnership for HIV/AIDS, TB and other related dis-
eases.
Commemoration of Africa Malaria Day
During the meeting (on 25 April) there will be a session devoted to
the Commemoration of the First Anniversary of African Malaria Control
Day (Decision AHG/Dec. 155 (XXXVI)
Expected Outcomes
1. 24 - 25 April 2001: The Multi-Sectoral Ministerial/Technical Meet-
ing (Plenary and Group Meetings) will work out the following:
i. Declaration;
ii. Plan of Action;
iii. Mechanism for implementation, monitoring and follow-up.
2. 26 - 27 April 2001: Assembly of Heads of State and Government to
consider these strategies for endorsement and commitment for imple-
mentation. There will be plenary and interactive sessions for maximum
participation.
3. Information dissemination by the Media and the Exhibition.
