Call for Applications: AMANET Workshop on Clinical Data Manage-
ment for Malaria Vaccine Trials

BACKGROUND
The African Malaria Network Trust (AMANET) will hold a training
workshop on Clinical Data Management in Malaria Vaccine Trials
at the Malaria Research and Training Centre (MRTC), University
of Bamako, Mali from 26 to 30 September 2005. The workshop is
targeting data managers from malaria research institutions
across Africa who presently or soon will be involved in malaria
vaccine trials.
Since inception, AMANET has been promoting the development of
sustainable capacity across African research institutions par-
ticipating in R&D. Development of the data management capacity
is one such area that requires to be strengthened so that clini-
cal testing environment in Africa is favourable for creating
pull mechanism for R&D into better intervention tools. So far
the involvement of African institutions in clinical trials has
traditionally been restricted to participant recruitment, proto-
col procedures, through to data collection. The aspects of pro-
tocol development, data base design, data processing and analy-
sis has typically been done by the northern collaborators and
lack of capacity is usually sited. This trend need not continue,
especially now that African researchers are getting more in-
volved in product development activities.
This call is made for middle to senior level personnel involved
in clinical data management in African research institutions in-
volved in malaria vaccine trials; preference will be given to
applicants from AMANET beneficiary institutions.
OUTCOMES
This will be a hands-on and practical course after which it is
expected that the participants will be able to:
Understand and appreciate the place of data management in the
trial process;
Be aware of GCP and major regulatory issues in product devel-
opment;
Be able to formulate a clinical data management plan for a
project;
Be able to create a data base in Microsoft Access® programme;
Design case report forms suitable for the database structure;
Provide validity and quality assurance checks;
Optimize the data processing and reporting.
HOW TO APPLY
Interested persons should submit a complete application, which
must include the following:
1. Brief Curriculum Vitae;
2. Summary of their research interest and role in current work
(not more than 10 lines);
3. A write-up to show how this workshop would benefit their in-
stitution (not more than 10 lines);
4. Names and addresses of two referees (including their tele-
phone numbers and email contacts).
The referees should be requested to independently submit letters
of support sent directly to the address below.
Please note that in order to achieve effective hands on train-
ing, the class will be limited to a maximum class 20 partici-
pants. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
SPONSORSHIP
Selected applicants will be awarded an AMANET sponsorship which
covers only tuition, economy class airfares, and a stipend to
meet living expenses during the workshop. Participants or their
home institutions should cover such other costs as visas fees,
costs in transit, and transport within home country.
