Brundtland speech from Winterthur Health Forum (2)
--------------------------------------------------
Colleagues:
It is very illuminating to compare Dr. Brundtland's speech at Winter-
thur with the speech that she gave (and the conference action plan)
at the just concluded international conference on "Health Research
for Development" held in Bangkok, Thailand (October 10 - 13). The
Bangkok assembly focused on how health research can benefit human de-
velopment. I proposed the thought experiment for the assembly to con-
sider how the deliberations and action plan would have been modified
if the title of the conference had been switched to "development for
health research". Clearly, the Winterthur assembly recognized the su-
premacy of building economic development first. Otherwise, health re-
search will continue to be a luxury that benefits only affluent urban
populations.
