Call for Applicants for a Writing Skills Workshop
-------------------------------------------------

4-7 June, 2004
Durban, South Africa

Southern African Regional Network on Equity in Health (EQUINET)
in co-operation with The University of New South Wales, Sydney,
Australia

This is the first call issued by the EQUINET Secretariat in co-
operation with the School of Public Health and Community Medicine
at The University of New South Wales, for participants in a work-
shop to be held in Durban, South Africa, June 4-7 2004, entitled
Capacity Building: Skills Workshop On Writing For Peer Reviewed
Journals. (For information on EQUINET see www.equinetafrica.org).

Applicants are asked to mailto:admin@equinetafrica.org with
'EQUINET WRITERS WORKSHOP' in the subject line the following for
consideration:
* name, institutional base and contact details
* theme area of EQUINET or other equity-in-Africa focused work
* one page outline of the scientific paper you seek to develop
  through the workshop
* curriculum vitae
* one other paper you have written.

There will be limited places in the workshop so early application
is advised. Closing date for applications is January 26, 2004.

This workshop is designed to support capabilities for effective
dissemination of the significant body of research results coming
from EQUINET activities through scientific journals and publica-
tions. It is being held as a response to specific demand from
EQUINET researchers for these areas of skills building. The ob-
jectives of the workshop are as follows:
* To build skills for writing in peer reviewed journals
* To understand how the peer review process works and to gain
some experience of peer review on own writing
* To facilitate peer review and feedback on a set of equity-
focused papers among a group of southern African researchers
  and practitioners

It is proposed that the skills built in this workshop will be
used to prepare papers for scientific publication with a possible
supplement of one international peer reviewed journal on equity
in health in southern Africa. In the absence of focus on one par-
ticular journal, participants will be assisted in thinking
through an appropriate journal to which to submit their paper.

Participants for this workshop will be drawn primarily from among
researchers working in EQUINET research programmes. Others to be
considered include other Africans working on equity-focused
themes. Participants to the workshop will be expected to partici-
pate in the pre workshop process to qualify for sponsorship for
the workshop. This will include:
* Initial application as indicated above, by 26 January 2004
* Submission of a draft paper for a scientific journal of no more
than 4,000 words, dealing with equity, health and Africa, by
March 30, 2004. (Those who are unable to submit a paper by this
date will not be considered for participation in the workshop).
* A selection committee will identify up to 15 papers with great-
est interest and potential and will send these to participants
and independent peer reviewers for comments. These will be re-
turned to authors in mid April along with comments and the com-
mittee's decision about which papers will be incorporated in
  the Writers Workshop.
* Successful candidates will be expected to prepare a further
draft, taking account of the reviewers' comments, and bring
this for discussion and further development within the Work-
  shop.
* It will be preferable if participants can bring to the workshop
a laptop plus the 15 references they are drawing on most heav-
  ily in writing their paper.

It is expected that participant's papers will be submitted to ap-
propriate scientific journals. The workshop will aim to leave au-
thors with advice and comments on how to complete their papers
and will agree a timetable for final submission.

The workshop will be run by Anthony Zwi, Professor and Head of
the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at The Univer-
sity of New South Wales, Sydney, assisted by another senior sci-
entist. Anthony is originally from South Africa and was the
Health Policy editor for Social Science and Medicine 1995-2001.
He is currently on the Editorial Board of the British Medical
Journal and is an advisory editor for Social Science and Medi-
cine.

EQUINET will provide funding for the travel and accommodation
costs for participants from the EQUINET research programmes. It
is expected, subject to funding, that delegates will stay on for
the EQUINET southern African conference June 8-9 and for the IS-
eQH meeting June 10-12, both being held in South Africa. Partici-
pants are therefore encouraged to submit abstracts to ISEQH be-
fore their closing date of Dec 14
(see http://www.iseqh.org/en/index.htm)

Please send applications mailto:admin@equinetafrica.org by Janu-
ary 26 2004
