satellite meetings at at the International Conference on AIDS and Sexu-

September 1999
Speakers are being sought to give presentations on different aspects of
the topic "Men, sex and HIV in Africa: risks, roles and responsibili-
ties" at three satellite meetings organised by the Global Health Coun-
cil and Panos and sponsored by the Society for Women and AIDS in Af-
rica, the US Department of Health and Human Services and (provision-
ally) UNAIDS.
Speakers are being sought for some or all of the following topics. Sug-
gestions for other topics on the issue are welcome. Further information
for all speakers is given below:
Topic A - socio-cultural context of male sex
What are some of the social and cultural factors behind men's sexual
behaviour in one or more societies in sub-Saharan Africa? A down-to-
earth presentation focusing on the reality of men's lives rather than
the theory.
Topic B - psychological context of male sex
Self-confidence, upbringing, education, income - some of the many fac-
tors underlying men's sexual behaviour. An overview of the pyschologi-
cal factors underlying men's sexual behaviour in one or more societies
in sub-Saharan Africa. How does men's sexual behaviour change over
time, as young men marry and become fathers? A down-to-earth presenta-
tion focusing on the reality of men's lives rather than the theory.
Topic C - Patterns of sexual behaviour and the HIV/STI epidemic
What are the different patterns of men's sexual behaviour (the number
of partners, the frequency of sex and kinds of sexual activity) under-
lying the epidemic in one or more African societies.
Topic D - The impact of men's sexual behaviour
[This may be subdivided]
A broad look at the impact of men's sexual behaviour in one or more Af-
rican societies on women, on themselves and other men, and on the com-
munities in which they live. Examining such issues as exposure to
HIV/STIs, fatherhood and work. Does the fact that most community lead-
ers are men restrict the scope and effectiveness of HIV/STI prevention
programmes?
Topic E - Positive images
How do - or could - men contribute positively to HIV/AIDS prevention?
What men can we look to as positive role models?
Topic F - Working with men: the practice
A description of one or more projects working with men in Africa to re-
duce their risk of contracting and transmitting HIV.
Topic G - Working with men: the theory
A theoretical approach to changing African men's sexual behaviour
Topic H - Working with men: a woman's perspective
Can men in Africa change? A woman's perspective
Topic I - Living with HIV
It has been suggested that it is more difficult for African men than
African women to accept the diagnosis of HIV. What are the particular
experiences of African men living with HIV? How can men with the virus
contribute to the welfare of other men and women?
Notes:
Please feel free to recommend yourself or another speaker!
Please also feel free to recommend other aspects of men and HIV/AIDS
that should be covered.
Speakers will be chosen on a combination of experience and presentation
skills. It is expected that the series as a whole will present experi-
ences from across sub-Saharan Africa, from men and women, including
those living with the virus, from different educational and income lev-
els.
An academic or research background is useful but not essential. Far
more important is experience and the ability to convey that experience
to others, in clear language that can be understood by those with lit-
tle knowledge of your topic. Good communication skills depend respond-
ing to the needs of the audience - and the audience in Lusaka will come
from a very wide background.
Funding may be available to bring some speakers to Lusaka.
If recommending yourself, please send the following information to the
Global Health Council or Panos:
a) confirmation as to which topic(s) you wish to address (choose no
more than two), together with a description of the approach you
would take;
b) a brief curriculum vitae (resume) with emphasis on your experience
in the topic(s) you wish to present;
c) the names and contact details of two referees with experience in
this area.
If recommending someone else, please give us their e-mail or fax de-
tails.
