A 2-DAY WORKSHOP ON ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN HEALTH COMMUNICATION FOR
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND CHANGE - A PRIMER FOR
PRACTITIONERS

DATE: 30 - 31 August, 2000
Venue: Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria

INTRODUCTION

The Centre for Health Policy and Strategic Studies is a private, non-
profit health services organization committed to the ideals of pro-
moting better health in Nigeria through advocacy, research, capacity
building and the promotion of health communication as a tool for so-
cial change.

There has been considerable lopsidedness in the reportage of issues
and events in our media in this country. The media in Nigeria as
elsewhere delight so much in digging into scandals and corruption in
high places, into changing fortunes of politicians and celebrities,
into natural and human upheavals and calamities of a dramatic kind.

For communication and journalism to be relevant to the people, it
must deal with the problems and challenges of development. Indeed
one of the most central issues in development is the very survival of
the people, the poor state of their health and their economic well-
being. Obviously, someone needs to acquaint our people with the cen-
tral role of poverty, health and population in their lives. But it
is not just ordinary people that need to hear the message, policy
makers and community leaders need to understand how important and in-
ter-related poverty, health and population are to development.

CHPSS recognizes the crucial role that journalists and health commu-
nicators will play in addressing these problems. Consequently, it is
pleased to organize in partnership with other change agents a 2-day
workshop for health reporters and correspondents in major media
houses on "Issues and Challenges in Health Communication for social
development, Poverty Alleviation and Change".

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

The workshop aims to improve participants' skills, knowledge and at-
titudes in health communication to achieve social development and
change. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to be
familiar with the following:

* Essential issues and challenges in health communication.

* Sources of information in health relevant to development for social
  change.

* The need to motivate behavioural and social change in health.

* Strategies needed for health communication to induce social change.

* Experiences of other agents of change in achieving health and so-
cial development in Nigeria and elsewhere.

* Strategies to use in focusing attention to population issues in the
promotion of good health in the Nigerian Society and how to motivate
policy makers, community leaders and the people at large to invest
  wisely in public health.

CORE OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP INCLUDE:

1. To provide participants with skill to re-focus attention to core
issues in poverty, population and health as if it affects social de-
velopment.

2. To direct participants' attention to sources of information and
other resources in the conduct of their work.

3. To motivate and expose participants to see benefits for themselves
and the community in pursuing a career in health communication.

4. To provide them with necessary tools and strategy for use in com-
munication towards improving the health and lives of citizen.

5. To assist in establishing life-long linkages with influential
change agents active in the community.

be selected through nomination. Participants must be persons who have
demonstrated leadership potentials as health communicators in their
respective organizations. Other expected participants include Direc-
tors of Primary Health Care from Federal and State Ministries of
