Course: Drug Policy Issues for Developing Countries
---------------------------------------------------
Source: e-drug@usa.healthnet.org

28 June - 10 July 1998
Pretoria, South Africa

organised by the School of Pharmacy at MEDUNSA, Boston University
School of Public Health and the World Health Organisation.

This two week seminar is intended for policy makers and senior managers
responsible for pharmaceutical systems in developing countries, and for
senior officials of donor agencies. The faculty is drawn from universi-
ties, the World Health Organisation, the US Food and Drug Administra-
tion, the South African Department of Health and other agencies.

The seminar's workshop format will combine lectures, in-depth discus-
sion of case studies, field trips, and small-group exercises. Case
studies and background papers will be distributed to participants be-
fore arrival in Pretoria, South Africa.

Enrolment is limited to facilitate maximum interaction among partici-
pants and between participants and faculty. The first seminar, in 1996,
attracted 38 participants from 32 countries.

Over the last 15 years developing countries around the world have
adopted essential drug lists, national formularies, and standard treat-
ment guidelines. But national drug policies require more than drug
lists; hard choices have to be made.

Seminar topics include:

a. Assessment of Drug Systems
b. Developing and Implementing a National Drug Policy
c. Selection, Formularies, and Treatment Guidelines
d. Procurement Issues
e. Quality Assurance
f. Financing and Pharmaco-economic Issues
g. Regulation and Legislation
h. Human Resource Planning and Development
i. Intersectoral Collaboration
j. Promoting Rational Use of Drugs
