Dear Colleagues,
The Proceedings from the Second MIM Pan-African Conference - held in
Durban last year have been completed. We would like to congratulate
Catherine Davies and Brian Sharp for their hard work to get this re-
port together. We would also like to thank all the authors for their
participation in the conference and their reports for the Proceed-
ings. We are sure this will be an invaluable resource of information
to the malaria research community.
We are in the process of organizing the Third MIM Pan-African Confer-
ence, which will be held in Arusha, Tanzania, November 2002. The con-
ference will be organized by the Fogarty International Center of NIH,
the National Institute for Medical Research - Tanzania, and the Or-
ganization of African Unity in collaboration with other regional and
international organizations. For more information and suggestions
about the conference please write to:

We are delighted to announce that the Proceedings of the 1999 MIM
Conference in Durban South Africa have now been released onto the MIM
web site (http://mim.nih.gov/english/news/index.html). Printed copies
will also shortly be circulated to all participants in the Conference
and will be available to others on request.
Please, mailto:MIMCongress@mrc.ac.za
or
Fax +27-31-2051498 to request a free copy of the report.
The Proceedings contain transcripts of the keynote presentations as
well as summary reports on the breakout sessions in ten theme areas,
ranging from health economics and information systems, through clini-
cal management of malaria, vector biology and control, and vaccines
and immunology. The Durban Conference attracted over 850 delegates
from both the research and control communities and the Proceedings
provide a record of the high quality presentations, lively discus-
sions, conclusions and recommendations that arose from this remark-
able gathering.
The reports summarize the current status of malaria research in Af-
rica and highlight identified research needs and priorities, includ-
ing major gaps in data to underpin control programs. As such the Pro-
ceedings are an enormously valuable resource for those involved in
planning, funding and carrying out malaria research and control ac-
tivities. We hope that they can contribute towards shaping the future
directions of research at national, regional and international lev-
els, towards yielding practical health benefits in both the short-
and longer-term.
Catherine Davies and Brian Sharp
