Equity in Health in South Africa
--------------------------------
Equity in society has been the holy grail of humanitarians for centu-
ries. Equity in health is no less sought after, but no more attained.
In South Africa, after the deliberate segregation and discrimination of
apartheid policies, our society is still deeply fragmented, with ineq-
uities in health a glaring manifestation of the inequities still preva-
lent in almost all spheres of life.
The February issue of Update, a publication of the Health Systems
Trust, looks at equity in health in South Africa, including statistics
about health determinants and health status as well as articles on is-
sues such as health services in previously disadvantaged areas, legis-
lative attempts to address inequity in this country, and HST's Equity
Gauge which attempts to monitor moves towards equity in health in South
Africa.
