AFRO-NETS> GIS for Health

Geographic Information Systems for Health
-----------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues:

I would appreciate responses from those of you in Zimbabwe, Zambia or
Kenya, who are involved with Geographic Information Systems. I am looking
for GIS/geographical data as relates to health; while I realize this is an
extremely broad topic, there is actually not that much out there, from what
I have seen. Ideally there would be some data on access to health care,
mapping of indicators such as family planning method use, perhaps even
distribution of HIV/AIDS (I know there is some work in South Asia, for
example on tracing trucking routes and correlating with AIDS spread).

This is to be used as part of our training program, Advances in Health
Communication, which utilizes the SCOPE (Strategic Communication Planning &
Evaluation) software program.

We are preparing our program for use in these countries. Assistance as
well as proposals for collaboration as regards displaying appropriate data
are welcomed. In addition, since we are in the midst of finalising
software choices for GIS data display (eg Idrisi, etc.), your suggestions
in this area would also be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Omar Khan
