Dear Readers,

HealthNet News is an e-mail health information newsletter designed to serve the information needs of health professionals in resource-constrained countries. Produced by the AED-SATELLIFE Center for Health Information and Technology, HealthNet News contains abstracts and full text articles from trusted, peer-reviewed journals.

Over the course of the coming year AED-SATELLIFE will publish five special editions of HealthNet News focusing on child health. Topics covered will include children and HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, nursing care, and behavior change communication. Attached is the first in this series, dealing with the crucial issue of children’s nutrition.

The World Bank’s 2006 report "Repositioning Nutrition as Central to Development"<http://siteresources.worldbank.org/NUTRITION/Resources/281846-1131636806329/NutritionStrategyOverview.pdf> cited malnutrition as the underlying cause of at least 3.5 million deaths worldwide, and 35 percent of the disease burden in children younger than 5 years of age. The number of global deaths attributed to malnutrition constitutes the largest percentage of any risk factor in this age group.

This January the Lancet produced a series on nutrition, bringing to light the deplorable state of childhood malnutrition worldwide and the negligence of the development community in dealing with this plight.

This special edition of HealthNet News on child nutrition presents peer-reviewed reports of research and analysis on nutrition interventions that outline the most effective actions to take to combat childhood undernutrition. Below is the table of contents for this issue.
