The Pan American Health Organization recently published a book that
would be of interest to the members of this listserv, since its top-
ics are related to nutrition and health promotion.
Written in cooperation with the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit and
the World Bank, "Nutrition, Health and Child Development: Research
Advances and Policy Recommendations" offers research on the topic of
nutrition and its impact on neonatal, early and later stages of child
development.
This publication examines how and to what extent nutrition, health,
and stimulation programs can affect children's cognitive and social
development and their ability to learn in school.
Several of the book's articles, written by leading professionals, de-
scribe cutting-edge research on topics including under-nutrition,
iron and iodine deficiencies, neonatal feeding and psychosocial dep-
rivation, short-term food deprivation, parasitic infections, and psy-
chosocial deprivation.
They also review results from early childhood interventions, includ-
ing nutritional supplementation and psychological stimulation, as
well as interventions in later childhood, including school feeding
and de-worming programs.
For those that would like to receive information on how to acquire a
copy of this publication, please send me your name, institution and
postal address.
