[afro-nets] HIV/AIDS National Protest March in Canada

HIV/AIDS National Protest March in Canada
-----------------------------------------

FROM COMMITMENT TO ACTION:
Join HIV Edmonton in the National Protest March, 14th May 2004.
If you can't join us in physical form, please send us messages
of support from you or your organisation to be read or made into
placards.

We will be a 'Sea of Red' as we march from HIV Edmonton (10550-
102 Street) to Anne McLellan's Office (12304 - 107 Avenue).

Wear red, meet at 9 am at HIV Edmonton, get signs and join us to
protest inadequate government funding.

We are inviting you to unite with us and support us in demanding
that the Canadian government, amongst other things, increases
funding towards the Canadian Strategy on HIV/AIDS (CSHA).

The federal government has failed to increase funding towards
the Canadian Strategy on HIV/AIDS (CSHA): Federal funding has
been frozen for 11 years. The CSHA budget remains frozen at 42.2
million dollars. This is the same amount that was allocated by
the conservative government (Brian Mulroney) in 1993. If we con-
sider inflation, the Federal government now contributes approxi-
mately 20% less to the CSHA than the conservative government
did.

Lack of funding has severe implications for prevention, treat-
ment and research in the area of HIV/AIDS, and sends out a nega-
tive message to both the Canadian and international public.
