HIV testing without treatment? (23)
-----------------------------------

I am very interested in Khvay's contribution regarding HIV testing in
Cambodia (thread #22). Here in southern Africa, there is a common
feeling that women have much to lose from being tested - that if they
test positive, their husband or boyfriend may well leave them even
though they probably became infected from him. Even so, it seems that
women are more open to being tested.

I would like to know how it came about that the young men are the
ones being tested in Cambodia. Is there a strong incentive? Did it
come from within the community, or can it be traced to agencies from
outside the community? Is government involved? Religious institu-
tions? Families? Also, I wonder if anyone knows how commonly the
young man might "hide the fact that he is positive in order to avoid
the shame of a cancelled wedding."

Perhaps others have something to contribute about incentives for (and
consequences of) being tested in different cultures.
