HIV testing without treatment? (28)
-----------------------------------
Dear all,
I am new to the AFRO-NETS family. I recently joined the newly created
HIV/AIDS section in the UNICEF Eastern Southern regional office.
This debate has intrigued me following the recent development in
Kenya. Several months ago a man went to court to help him throw out
his HIV positive wife. His HIV status is unknown. The judge agreed
that the wife posed a danger to her husband's life and consequently
threw out the ailing wife. Determined to stay in her matrimonial
home, the wife took the case to the high court and the court made a
landmark ruling compelling the man to take back his wife.
Two days later, another woman who had been thrown out by the husband
came forward asking the court to help her out. Her husband's HIV
status is also unknown.
I am not an expert in these area but I feel that asking pregnant
women to test without sensitising the community to offer them the
support they need should they be positive is futile. On the other
hand, it is important for women to know their status as it will help
the medical attendants, get them the necessary treatment - if they
can afford it!
