Home and Community Care - Conference Coverage
---------------------------------------------

5 to 8th December, 1999
Paris, France

The Home and Community Care Forum (HCCare) invites Virtual Delegates
to the 4th International Conference on Home and Community Care for
Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (Paris 99)

Following on from the recent coverage of the Regional Conferences in
Lusaka (ICASA) and Kuala Lumpur (ICAAP), the focus of international
attention is about to switch a focus on home and community care for
people living with HIV/AIDS.

The 4th International Conference on Home and Community Care for Per-
sons Living with HIV/AIDS begins today in Paris (Paris 99). Up to
2000 participants (representing 100 countries) are expected, and
close to 100 press representatives, from the North and South.

The Opening Ceremony today will include Madame Dominique Guillot (Se-
cretaire d'Etat a la Sante, France) and Kenneth Kaunda, Former Presi-
dent of Zambia.

The theme "For a Renewed Solidarity" calls on all working in care and
prevention to renew our commitment towards supporting people affected
and infected with HIV.

Dr. Peter Piot (UNAIDS) writes in a communique: "The ...Conference is
a vital opportunity to remind ourselves that the battle for care and
support takes place daily and hourly in the homes, shelters and com-
munities of people directly affected by HIV/AIDS."

Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland (WHO), in her message in the second an-
nouncement, wrote: "HIV/AIDS care is being self-administered or de-
livered by families and within communities all over the world...It is
at conferences such as this that lessons can be shared, between coun-
tries and across sectors, so that successes can be replicated or
adapted.... The health sector has much to learn from NGOs and commu-
nity based organizations in initiating and managing provision of
HIV/AIDS care and support."

The Conference Chair, Jean-Marc La Piana, and Co-ordinators, Anne Pe-
titgirard and Joel Gauthier-Joubaud, aspire: "Our hope is that the
international Communities place treatment Issues at the top of their
agenda. The fact that access to treatment in developing countries is
often impossible, as well as that for certain people in the industri-
alized world access is difficult, should remain a major concern

Together over the next few days with representatives from Africa,
North and South America, Asia and the Pacific... we will have the op-
portunity to share our hopes and fears to strengthen our resolve to
fight this epidemic."

Join the virtual Conference and enter into the discussion.

***** What is the Home and Community Care Forum? *****

HCCare is an independent HIV/AIDS e-mail discussion created recently
in conjunction with Paris 99 to discuss issues around home and commu-
nity care for people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.

The HCCare network is designed to raise awareness and expand partici-
pation to those unable to attend Paris VIH 99 Conference in person --
but are the caregivers, associations, health care personnel in pri-
mary care services or the home, governmental, and non-governmental
organizations involved in care everyday.

We look forward to your participation and contribution to the
HCCare/Paris 99 debate, and welcome comments and suggestions on how
conference coverage can be improved.

This initiative is supported by UNAIDS, Fondation du Present and
Paris VIH99
