RPMM PROGRAMME

The Regional Prevention of Maternal Mortality (RPMM) Network is an
African Network of NGOs that started as three countries in West Af-
rica which designed, implemented and evaluated projects to reduce ma-
ternal mortality. So far the Network has expanded to 20 countries
(with cohorts in all the sub-regions) in sub-Saharan Africa. It
builds on the valuable resources developed during the research phase,
its program approaches and a cohort of African experts in the field
of maternal mortality.

APPROACHES

*Multi-disciplinary Teamwork
*Mutli-Sectoral Teamwork
*Capacity Development
*Regional and International Collaboration

OBJECTIVES

* To expand RPMM approaches and build/strengthen national capacity in
sub-Saharan African countries to reduce Maternal Mortality.

* To maintain national, regional and international collaboration and
  partnerships.

* To disseminate RPMM Network results and lessons learned through
  publications, conferences and seminars.

The RPMM Network promotes multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral team-
work. It also lays emphasis on collaboration with local governments,
ministries of health, NGO's, traditional leaders, communities and the
private sector, to ensure the sustainability of their activities. The
Network also maintains international partnerships with foreign uni-
versities, international agencies and NGOs, and is a member of Global
Groups of the Safe Motherhood Initiative.

The teams' research has shown that their approaches for the preven-
tion of maternal deaths can be low cost, sustainable and replicable.
Their emphasis has been on local resource mobilization and utiliza-
tion of existing resources, both human and material in order to do
the following:

*Improving Availability and Quality of Care at Health Institutions
*Improving Access to Emergence Obstetric Care (EmOC).
*Community Mobilization to improve related services (e.g. Blood do-
nation, Loan schemes) and utilization of health services.
*Community Health Education.

Thus the RPMM Network provides technical assistance to national
teams.
The teams achieve their goals through addressing factors that pose
barriers to care, which cause the following delays:

1. Delay in deciding to seek care
2. Delay in reaching care
3. Delay in getting care at the health facilities.

In addressing the factors that contribute to these delays and subse-
quent death, the RPMM teams with the assistance of both private and
public sectors first improve the health services before mobilizing
the community to utilize them. Thus maintaining their adage of "Put-
ting the House in order before inviting the Guests".
