International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation (12)
--------------------------------------------------------

Dear Michael,

You are so mistaken if you think male circumcision and female genital
mutilation can be equated. For you to think there is nothing wrong
with FGM suggests to me you need to revise your female anatomy before
you start any comparison. The labia minora and majora of the female
cannot be equated to the foreskin in the male by any stretch of the
imagination.

I agree that in terms of using unsterilised instruments and blunt ra-
zors the potential complications could be the same but that is where
the similarity ends. There is no mutilation in males, no disturbance
of function and male circumcisions have been practiced here in Ghana
since time immemorial with minimal problems. There are always compli-
cations from FGM. Please stop confusing issues and others.

Yours,

Afua Hesse
