Internet: Bridges to Development (Bamako 2000)
----------------------------------------------

Upon the initiative of President Alpha Oumar Konare of Mali, Bamako
will be the capital of the Internet in February 2000. The city will
host an international meeting "Internet: Bridges to Development" or-
ganised by the ANAIS Network (http://www.anais.org).

The meeting will be threefold:
- Workshops and professional meetings (21, 22 and 23 February);
- Plenary conference on the theme "Internet and multi-lingualism" (24
  and 25 February);
- Exhibition "Bridges to development" (24, 25 and 26 February).

The exhibition will present the best achievements through a contest.
Since the mid 90s, Internet uses for development have increased to
the extent of being used nowadays in very different areas such as
health, public offices and citizenship, human rights, economy, envi-
ronment etc. The contest aims at identifying the most promising works
and disseminating the most effective experiences and methodologies in
order to make the Internet useful to stakeholders in development.

The winning authors will be invited to the February 2000 Bamako In-
ternational Meeting. They will present their achievements at the Ex-
hibition. These will also be widely disseminated throughout the world
by CD-Rom, in a booklet and on a web site.
