Life Time Impregnation of Mosquito Bed Nets (3)
-----------------------------------------------

Dear Gabriel,

The first containers are moving into Burkina Faso now, but as we have
continuously been developing the PermaNet(tm) the first lots only
stand 12 washes. But it will still be interesting to see if the ex-
pected longevity in the field will fully correlate with our labora-
tory trials. The people we have talked to in Burkina Faso say they
traditionally wash bed nets once a year, although it sounds of very
little to me in that country. But if this information is correct,
even 12 washes should be lifetime of the bed net, and the 21 washes
well above.

2 larger field trials will be coming up soon in Uganda and Cote d'I-
voire, and these tests will be a PermaNet(tm) impregnation lasting 21
washes or more.

It will only be natural to use the mosquito netting as curtains, and
we are able to manufacture the curtains according to size, if there
is any volume in the same sizes. Otherwise we would prefer only to
sell the PermaNet(tm) impregnated netting fabric for people to manu-
facture their own sizes of curtains.

To impregnate simple children clothing with PermaNet(tm) is a very
interesting idea that I would like to look into. Could you or some-
body else give me some hints? It must be a cheap solution to make it
affordable for all families to buy for their children. Polyester
should be preferred as cotton sucks a big quantity of insecticide
without releasing it again.

Any health hazards related to the insecticide and its dose should be
ruled out, as we are only using what has been recommended by WHO Pest
Evaluation Scheme, and within limits recommended by them. Deltame-
thrin as we are using, is one of the insecticides that over the years
has been mostly used for human health purposes. To the best of my
knowledge this insecticide must have been used and continuously
tested for more than 20 years.

Best regards,

TORBEN
