Malawi rejects Anti-AIDS loan (9)
---------------------------------

Loans for the fight against HIV/AIDS: is that really the way we want
to go? If there was a flood or war in some part of the world, will
the world look on, or will governments and relief organisations move
in with help? Will such help be given as a loan? Yet, no war has
claimed more lives than AIDS.

I believe governments and donor agencies should be thinking of how to
increase funding for HIV/AIDS programmes in the worst hit areas of
the world. The World Bank should concentrate on what it does best:
making rich countries richer, and leave the fight against HIV/AIDS to
people who are really interested in saving lives. Championing the
cause of pharmaceutical organisations, under the guise of loans for
anti-AIDS activities, will only distract energy from genuine fight
against HIV/AIDS. Surely, the world can do without such distraction.
