HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY AT BERLIN
Humboldt University was founded in 1810 under the name of "Friedrich-
Wilhelms-Universitt" as a "universitas litterarum" which would
unite teaching and research and strive towards a comprehensive human-
istic education for its students. Twenty-nine Nobel laureates have
been associated with the university in the course of their teaching
and research careers, contributing to the excellent academic reputa-
tion, which the university continues to enjoy today. The Charit, a
hospital which evolved from the pest house outside the Berlin city
walls, became the university's Faculty of Medicine in 1829 and is one
of Germany's largest and most renowned Medical Schools. Today some
33.000 students are enrolled at Humboldt University in more than 220
