AFRO-NETS> Misoprostol / Methotrexate as oral abortion inducers

Misoprostol / Methotrexate as oral abortion inducers
----------------------------------------------------

Forwarded from: 'E-Drug' conference <e-drug@usa.healthnet.org>

As per 1 February 1997, the South African "Termination of Pregnancy" Bill has
come into effect, which legalises abortion in South Africa under some
conditions.

In order to assist health workers with performing abortions, the
Department of Health is looking into the possibility of using
Misoprostol and/or Methotrexate as oral abortion inducers. The drugs are
available in SA, but are not yet registered for that indication.

Our Reproductive Health Research Unit at Baragwana Hospital, Johannes-
burg, has been asked by the Dept. of Health to put together a file
on the use of those 2 drugs (alone or in combination) for consideration by the
Medicines Control Council.

We are looking for the following specific information:
- clinical trials (published / unpublished)
- protocols on the use of the drugs for this indication
- (draft) registration dossiers
- what countries have registered Misoprostol and/or Methotrexate for the
  indication of "abortion inducement"?

Your info is urgently needed; please fax or email your data. Offers to help
with
the analysis are also welcome.

Thank you very much for helping us out!
