London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Gates Malaria Programme
Research fellowships in malaria research and control
Applications from scientists from malaria endemic countries are in-
vited for three-year research fellowships in areas related to the
control of malaria. These fellowships are supported by a generous
award from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the London School
of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Fellows will be attached to
LSHTM but may spend a substantial period of their fellowship in a ma-
laria endemic area when this is necessary for their research, and
will be strongly encouraged to maintain their home links. Fellowships
may be held in any area of laboratory, clinical, entomological, epi-
demiological or social science relevant to the control of malaria.
Non-clinical candidates must have a doctoral degree (PhD or equiva-
lent) in a relevant area of science; clinical applicants should have
a postgraduate qualification and some previous experience of re-
search. Prior experience of research in malaria is desirable but not
essential.
Further information about the malaria programme at LSHTM may be seen
on the Malaria Centre web page:
http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/organisation/centres/malaria
Further details can be obtained from:
http://www.lshtm.ac.uk/organisation/centres/malaria/gateshome.html
Applications may be submitted at any time up to 31 August 2002, de-
tails on how to apply can be found in the further details. Receipt of
applications will be confirmed by e-mail together with details on how
your application will be processed.

PhD/DrPH studentships
Applications are invited for a number of PhD or DrPH studentships to
be held at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM),
the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the Centre for
Medical Parasitology, University of Copenhagen (CMP) and the Danish
Bilharziasis Laboratory (DBL) as a component of a generous award by
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop centres of excel-
lence in malaria research, teaching and control of Africa. Research
projects may be undertaken in any area of clinical, field, social
science or associated laboratory work that is relevant to the control
of malaria. Scholarships cover home fees, living expenses as appro-
priate, some research expenses and may include a re-entry grant. Ap-
plicants must have a good first degree in a relevant subject, for
study in the UK this should be the equivalent of an upper second
class honours or above degree). The studentships are only open to ap-
plicants from malaria endemic countries, applications are encouraged
from those involved in malaria control.
Further details of the malaria research programmes in progress at the
host institutions can be obtained from the web pages:
