Recent issues of "Network" available from FHI
---------------------------------------------
Family Health International (FHI) published four issues of "Network" in
1997, focusing on key issues related to reproductive health and family
planning.
Vol. 18, No. 1, fall 1997: 'Male and Female Sterilisation'
Compared with other contraceptive methods, voluntary male and female
sterilisations are highly effective and convenient. Articles examine
the comparative availability and acceptance of both male and female
sterilisation, along with recent research on safety issues and long-
term effectiveness. An additional contraceptive update article reviews
method choices for people over 40. Lastly, a discussion of lessons
learned regarding sterilisation services in developing countries high-
lights important ways to assure quality voluntary sterilisation serv-
ices.
Vol. 17, No. 4, summer 1997: 'Reproductive Health after Pregnancy'
In many countries, reproductive health services, such as family plan-
ning counselling, contraception and maternal health care, are not read-
ily available for postpartum or post-abortion women. Articles focus on
important reproductive health needs following pregnancy, when to begin
specific contraceptive methods, the role of men after pregnancy, and
the need for family planning after abortions.
Vol. 17, No. 3, spring 1997: 'Adolescent Reproductive Health'
Young women and men world-wide are especially vulnerable to reproduc-
tive health problems, including early or unplanned pregnancy and infec-
tion by sexually transmitted diseases. Articles discuss the importance
of sex education, gender issues, how understanding the psychological
pressures on youth can increase program effectiveness, and how media
can inform young adults about important reproductive health concerns
and direct them to appropriate services. A chart on contraceptive meth-
ods for adolescents includes advantages and disadvantages of each
method as it relates to adolescent usage.
Vol. 17, No.2 winter 1997: 'Family Planning and AIDS Prevention: Maxi-
mising Reproductive Health Resources'
Ways to maximise reproductive health resources include combining family
planning services with appropriate STD/HIV prevention activities. Arti-
cles discuss STD risk assessments, the use of emergency contraception
as a backup to condom use, and efforts to develop HIV drugs, vaccines
and microbicides. Factors influencing service to different client
groups, including women, HIV-infected mothers, and youth are examined.
