Regional Training Course in Reproductive Health Data Management and Analysis

The Mauritius Institute of Health is launching a new Regional Train-
ing Programme on Reproductive Health Data Management and Analysis.
The first course for English speaking countries will be held at the
Institute from 14 April to 9 May 2003.

Introduction
The Mauritius Institute of Health (MIH) is pleased to announce a Re-
gional Training Programme in Reproductive Health Data Management and
Analysis for Programme Managers from countries of the Sub-Saharan Af-
rica. This programme is organized by the MIH with the collaboration
and support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the
Government of Mauritius. The first course will be conducted in Eng-
lish at the Institute in Mauritius from 14 April to 9 May 2003.
Course objectives
The participants will acquire skills in the management of reproduc-
tive health service data. They will be able to criticize and analyze
correctly health services statistics; present results on tables,
graphs and charts and interpret the findings. It is expected that
participants will be able to produce quarterly reports needed for
monitoring and management purposes.
Course Contents
The following modules will be taught during the four weeks :

*�Reproductive Health Data Management and Analysis
*�Analysis of Service Data
*�Drugs and Contraceptive Projections
*�Population and Reproductive Health Statistics
*�Country Action Plan
*�Development of an Action Plan for Implementation in home country
Advance preparation
The participants will bring with them service data from health fa-
cilities in their home country. These data will include information
on the number of deliveries, antenatal visits, surveillance data and
service statistics pertaining to HIV/AIDS, family planning methods
and clients. The data will be collected for a period of one year.
Teaching and Learning methods
Participants will be exposed to an active learning process. Group
work will be organized to allow discussions, sharing of experiences
and cross fertilization. Service data brought by participants will be
the subject of analysis and discussions with facilitators and other
course participants. The team from each country will be required to
transform the data set in an annual report using skills acquired dur-
ing the training.
Assessment of Learning
A pre-test will be administered at the beginning of course sessions
to assess participants' entry level and to identify critical areas
that need special attention. A post-test will indicate the level of
learning achievement for each participant. The preparation of an ac-
tion plan for implementation in the home country of the participant
will indicate the level of skills developed during the training. Suc-
cessful completion of the course will lead to the award of a Certifi-
cate of Competence.
Evaluation
A course evaluation by the participants will be organized in order to
get feedback on the technical, managerial and organisational aspects
of the course. The results of this evaluation will be discussed in
plenary in the presence of the organizers of the course.
Documentation
Participants will receive course handbooks and copies of relevant
reading materials. They will also have access to the library and
other learning facilities available at the Institute
Accommodation
The participants are booked in a hotel in the vicinity of the Insti-
tute. Transport is provided to participants between the hotel and the
Institute. The Institute also provides transport to participants from
the airport to the hotel on their arrival and from the hotel to the
airport on their departure. The costs of board and lodging are borne
by the participant
Profile of Participants
The course is targeting nurses, nurse midwives with managerial skills
and other personnel involved in the management and provision of RH
Services. Each country will be invited to send a group of four candi-
dates comprising of the RH Coordinator, programme manager, a service
provider and a health statistician.
Training cost
The tuition fee for each participant is US $ 1,500. The sponsoring
agency will also be responsible for the travel arrangements of the
participants and the living allowance for their stay in Mauritius.
The prevailing UN stipend rate for Mauritius (approximately 60 US$
per day) will be applicable to participants. The agency will also
have to provide participants with their air tickets and an advance in
foreign currency for days spent in transit for both legs of the jour-
ney.
Funding
This training programme is mounted and run with the financial support
from the UNFPA. Candidates nominated by their respective governments
will have to seek funding from UNFPA Country Offices and other fund-
ing agencies.
Climatic Conditions
Mauritius is a well known tourist attraction and enjoys a pleasant
climate throughout the year. The temperature varies between 28 C and
33 C during the dry season from October to March and between 18 C and
27 C during the rest of the year.
