Why the Course?

Throughout Africa, dynamic managers of reproductive health programmes
are seeking practical assistance in managing their organisations.
They know that good management is critical, and that appropriate
staffing and staff achievement are essential components of a success-
ful management structure. This course provides state-of-the-art guid-
ance to RH programme managers who are dedicated to achieving organ-
isational success through modern management techniques. Offered for
the first time in 1999, this four-week course is adapted from the
former six-week course in order to respond to client demand.

Course Benefits

- build a team and facilitate teamwork
  outline the components of reproductive health with reference to
  the Cairo ICPr)
- explain the components of the management process and its applica-
  tion to reproductive health programmes
- explain the management implications of the shift from family plan-
  ning to reproductive health
- design a reproductive health project proposal
- design organisational charts conducive for implementing reproduc-
  tive health programmes
- write job descriptions
- recruit staff for RH programmes
- develop and implement supervision plans for reproductive health
  programmes
- apply problem-solving and decision-making techniques to specific
  management situations
- apply leadership skills in various management situations
- motivate staff
- develop a staff appraisal tool
- establish a staff development programme
- appreciate the importance and use of selected management systems
  including Management Information Systems and Monitoring and Evalua-
  tion in health programmes
- appreciate the importance of quality in managing reproductive
  health programmes
- describe sustainability issues in reproductive health programme
  management

Audience

Regional reproductive health programme co-ordinators working with the
Ministry of Health, a Family Planning Association or a national or
international Non-Governmental Organisation are excellent candidates
for the course.

Training Methodology

Our trainers will lead a dynamic and participatory training experi-
ence using exercises, discussions, case-studies and role-plays. These
are tempered with informal on-the-job apprenticeships and mentoring
programmes for a well-balanced approach.
Participants will share their own experience to enrich the learning
process.

Tuition
US$ 2,790

Tuition covers administrative and instructional costs, text, materi-
als, supplies, health insurance, field trips, airport pick-up and
drop-off and certificate awards.

Air Travel and Per Diem
Airfare, transit expenses and per diem are the responsibility of the
sponsoring organisation.

Accommodation
All participants will stay in the hotel identified by CAFS and will
abide by the booking arrangements established by CAFS and the hotel.

Accommodation costs: US$ 130 per day (Half Board).

Funding
Applicants are advised to seek financial assistance from bilateral
and multilateral agencies and organisations operating in their own
countries such as USAID, CIDA, UNFPA, FAO, and GTZ. In order to re-
serve a place in the course, it is advisable to indicate confirmed
funding at least six weeks before commencement of the course.
Bilaterally funded participants are advised to ensure that payments
are made by the sponsoring agency before the training programme be-
gins.
