Call for Proposals for Joint Research Proposal Development The
Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI)

Please note that this RFP is for joint research proposal devel-
opment by several groups and will not fund interventions or re-
search itself.

Topics covered

The research for which a proposal will be developed should fall
under the broad heading of improving sexual violence services.
Examples of possible research issues which fall under this
broader heading include:

* Understanding the magnitude and nature of sexual violence
* Exploring alternative community based (including justice) re-
   sponses to sexual violence
* Examining the medico-legal response to sexual violence
* Examining the medical response to sexual violence
* Looking at prevention of sexual violence against women

Purpose

The purpose of this call for proposals is to facilitate the
process of strengthening research partnerships and proposal de-
velopment in the field of sexual violence. Seed funding will be
provided to successful applicants to support activities related
to the development of a joint proposal such as a meeting among
partners to finalize a proposal and, in special cases, limited
field testing/piloting which is needed to prepare a compelling
proposal for funding.

Requirements

Each concept note must be submitted jointly by at least 3 enti-
ties (these may include but are not limited to academic or re-
search institutions, service delivery institutions and non-
governmental organizations)

At least one partner must be an NGO with a gender and woman-
centered perspective.

At least one of the partners must demonstrate a track record of
proven research capacity, research expertise and institutional
support. There should be an individual with demonstrated previ-
ous research experience involved in the research at each study
site.

Preference will be given to groups which are based in lower and
middle income countries.

Preference will be given to groups that plan to do comparative
research among sites in different countries, but innovative re-
search which is focused on one country will also be considered.

How to apply

Each partnership should submit:

1. A brief cover letter which indicates for which activities the
funding is sought and estimates the amount (in US Dollars)
needed to cover these. Please note that, as a general guidance,
this amount should be in the 10,000 USD - 40,000 USD range,
though solid applications for activities whose costs are outside
this range will be considered.

2. A concept paper of no more than 5 pages in length which
should:
A. Provide information about the organizations involved includ-
    ing: history, mission and goals, key staff, prior work on sexual
    violence, organizational structure, and sources of funding;
B. Indicate the background to the partnership and the project;
C. Indicate the area of focus of the research and what questions
    it is attempting to answer;
D. Outline the research plan for which the proposal will be de-
    veloped;
E. Explain the utility of the proposed research to affect policy.

Submissions must be made electronically to
mailto:svrimail@who.int

by 8 July 2005.
