UNAIDS is updating its “Back to Basics: Advocacy for HIV and AIDS” toolkit and would like to capture your experiences in advocating for HIV issues at the country level. The toolkit is designed for AIDS activists, advocates and professionals working in the field including UNAIDS, UNDP and other UN agencies personnel. The toolkit broadly focuses on advocacy and aims to provide guidance on how to develop an advocacy plan; what strategies to use for effective advocacy; and how to measure progress of advocacy work and assess the impact on the response. In addition, the toolkit will showcase some best practices and examples of good advocacy work.
In this regard, we would value your responses to the following questions:
1) How would you define ‘advocacy’ and its objectives? What is its significance towards your work?
2) Please share with us any example of advocacy work that you are involved in or were involved in. What strategies did you use? Did you partner with civil society or other organizations? Was it a one-off activity or a campaign? And what was its impact, if any?
3) Could you give a concrete example of challenges you faced in advocating for HIV issues (e.g. on human rights, most at risk populations: MSM, sex workers and transgender people) and how you dealt with this?
4) In your opinion what is the best way to monitor and evaluate advocacy work?
Please feel free to share any documents, presentations, charts, advocacy materials or photos that you deem useful for the toolkit. We encourage you to contribute to this discussion which will feed into the UNAIDS Advocacy Toolkit. Your contributions could be included and acknowledged in the toolkit. The discussion will be open for two weeks starting Monday 27 September, 2010 and will end October 12, 2010.
