Research Initiative on HIV-Related Stigma in Africa
-----------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is leading a
research initiative with in-country partners in three African coun-
tries -- Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Zambia -- to investigate the causes,
manifestations, and consequences of HIV/AIDS-related stigma and re-
sulting discriminatory acts. We are motivated to conduct this re-
search out of the realization that
1) HIV-related stigma is a substantial barrier to HIV/AIDS preven-
tion, treatment, care, and support programs, and that
2) we need to know more about stigma to design targeted interventions
to reduce it.

The basis for analysis is the community and its institutions - health
facilities, the workplace, schools, and religious groups. ICRW and
its in-country partners hope to gain an understanding of those fac-
tors that perpetuate or mitigate stigma and how they affect access to
HIV prevention, care, and support efforts. Input from HIV/AIDS pro-
gram managers and policy leaders informed the focus of the research
to ensure our findings will be useful to program development and pol-
icy formulation. The CHANGE Project/Academy for Educational Develop-
ment (AED) will use the research findings to develop pilot interven-
tions that minimize the influence of HIV-related stigma on the use of
prevention, care, and support programs. This study is supported by
USAID. Preliminary findings will be published in the coming weeks.

Attached is a link to our information bulletin, which describes the
research initiative in greater detail:
