Research on interventions for sex workers

We (the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, department Health Care and
Culture) are working with the Airlangga University in Surabaya and the
Universitas Indonesia in Jakarta on sex work, STDs and HIV/AIDS. We try to
develop interventions, but are facing the same problems everyone in this
line of work has.
At the AIDS conference in Vancouver last year we sat together with some of
the researchers and NGOs who are involved in action research for
appropriate interventions for sex workers and discussed some of the
problems. Is peer education the best way to proceed? What are the
constraints of peer education? Under what conditions does it succeed? What
alternatives for peer education do exist that empower sex workers? etc.
The idea was born to develop a network of researchers and NGOs active in
this field. The moment seems to have come to make a next step. Before
September 15 proposals have to be submitted to the EU DG-XII programme and
it seems wise to ask for funding for a CONCERTATIVE ACTION ON ACTION
RESEARCH WITH SEX WORKERS WITH REGARDS TO STDs AND HIV. We are in the stage
to formulate a proposal and we would like to know from different institutes
who are also active in this field that would like to be involved. Please
let us know ASAP if you are interested, what you are actually doing and
what your ideas for such a network would be.
