RFI: Essential Clinical and Public Health Packages in Africa
------------------------------------------------------------

We are in the process of defining and developing essential pack-
ages for various levels of health care in the country. We would
like to know if any other Sub-Saharan African country has de-
fined the basic package of care for each level of care. We are
interested in more detailed information such as the what condi-
tions can be managed at the dispensary, health center and hospi-
tal level? We are interested in defining the management of each
condition at every level, the referral criteria and the costs.
We are also defining specific public health interventions at
various levels of health system. This will help us order drugs
and supplies for various levels from the dispensary, health cen-
ter up to the district hospital.

Dear Dr Sharif

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is just finalising its
essential health services package. Services are defined and es-
sential drugs list made. Also, treatment guidelines. Now the
package is being costed.

The person here who is the "heart" and the leader of all this is
Director PHC, Ms M. Tiheli. I copy this to her. Perhaps you
could come and visit Lesotho!

Yours,

Dr Anneli Milen
