RFI: Rabies from apes?
----------------------

Dear AFRO-Netters,

has anyone of you ever witnessed a case of rabies transmission to hu-
mans by an ape's bite or scratch ? If so, I would be very interested
in information as to where and when this occurred.

I got interested in this topic because time and again travellers who
were bitten by apes in various parts of the world present to our De-
partment asking for post-exposure immunization. After a recent case
with severe side-effects after vaccination (polyneuropathy with burn-
ing pains for several months) I would appreciate more detailed infor-
mation about the actual risk of rabies under such circumstances.

Thank you in advance for your comments.
