RFI: Reaction to Female Condoms (2)
-----------------------------------
Source: Gender-aids <gender-aids@bizet.inet.co.th>
Dear Amy,
Your e-mail message regarding the female condom was forwarded to me by
Peter Aggleton. We have just completed a study in Uganda on female
methods of protection against STIs, including HIV, and I attach a copy
(see below) of our preliminary report. We hope to be publishing several
papers on this study in the next few months.
Very best wishes,
Graham Hart

Excerpt
INTRODUCTION
Hypotheses:
* Women are more likely to practice safer sex if the methods of protec-
tion are under their control.
* The female condom and vaginal virucides offer this possibility.
* They are therefore a potentially important means of preventing the
spread of HIV.
* Their acceptability will depend on social and cultural factors among
the target population.
* Acceptability will also depend on how they are presented, marketed
and used.
Aims:
To assess:
* the acceptability of the female condom and a range of formulations in
which virucides could be delivered,
* preferences for specific products,
* whether products would interfere with or enhance the enjoyment of sex
* issues of secrecy and female control.
