RFI: Study on bed nets (3)

There have indeed been many bed net studies in recent years. The cru-
cial point is that these studies have been conducted using insecticide
treated nets (ITNs). Far fewer studies have been done on the impact of
untreated nets on malaria transmission, even though such nets have ob-
viously been around for far, far longer. It is generally agreed, how-
ever, that untreated nets have little effect.
I think the first important ITN studies were those conducted in The
Gambia by the (UK) Medical Research Council.
A leading figure in the work there and the continuing development of
ITN programmes (now taking place across the tropics, not just in Af-
rica) is Professor Chris Curtis of the London School of Hygiene & Topi-
cal Medicine, Keppel St, London WC1E 7HT.
