[afro-nets] Roll Back Malaria failure (3)

Roll Back Malaria failure (3)
-----------------------------

Dear Colleagues

Am I missing something?
http://www.unfoundation.org/media_center/press/2005/pr_042605.asp

Raising US$ 500,000, or with matching funds US$ 600,000 is valu-
able... as long as it is used in a good way. Getting a group in
Manhattan to raise this kind of money should be pretty easy if
they were really engaged... but of course they are not.

But this amount from the "donors"... it's ridiculous. Remind me.
How much was mobilized for the tsunami disaster in a period of 2
weeks? (It's another question where it is now).

The job ought to be to raise US$ 5 billion so that the Global
Fund (GFATM) can do a meaningful amount of work.

And another job is to make sure that ALL the funds are used in
valuable ways and not just used to enrich participants with lit-
tle left for the beneficiaries, something that is sadly missing
at this stage of history in the official relief and development
assistance (ORDA) community including GFATM.

What are the funds going to be used for?...
... bednets?
... mosquito control?
... curative medication?
... prophylactic medication?
... study?
... research?

How much is going to go to beneficiaries and initiatives on the
ground? How much is going to get consumed by intermediaries and
overheads? How much is going to be blatantly mis-appropriated?
How much will disappear through corporate profiteering?

Can anyone give me an estimate of how much is needed to address
the malaria crisis country by country and year by year for the
next 10 years... and then some idea of how these numbers would
change if the right set of initiatives were to be implemented
rather than just any old initiative?
